SHENZHEN, along with 14 other cities, such as Beijing, Chongqing, Chengdu, and Zhengzhou, has been selected as part of the batch of cities to pilot the use of electric-powered vehicles in the public sector, according to a notice released at the official website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The notice, jointly endorsed by eight ministries and issued Monday, encourages the cities to form replicable experience and models for new energy vehicles (NEVs) to expand in consumer markets and play a demonstrative role in building a green and low-carbon transportation system.

According to the notice, the goal is to apply more than 600,000 NEVs in the public sector in the 15 cities, such as official vehicles, public transport, sanitation vehicles, cabs, postal services, logistics, airport vehicles, and heavy vehicles for specific scenarios. In terms of charging electricity transmission stations, over 700,000 charging piles and 7,800 battery-swapping stations will be built.

As early as 2017, Shenzhen became the world’s first city to realize the application of fully electric buses. Data showed that the use of electric-powered public transport can save up to 345,000 cubic tons of standard coal and 1.35 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions on average per year. The city’s app-based cabs, around 96,000 units in total, are also electric-powered. In addition, the city’s 96,000 cargo vehicles and 4,200 dump trucks are electric powered, taking the lead in numbers among world cities.

Since the beginning of this year, Shenzhen has offered incentives and subsidies to encourage consumers to purchase NEVs and the policies have benefited 63,000 consumers. NEVs have been promoted for use in tourism, State-owned enterprises, garbage transportation, and port transportation.

Data from the Shenzhen Development and Reform Commission showed that the city has promoted the use of 191,000 NEVs so far this year. The city aims the number of NEVs on the road will reach 1 million by 2025.

In terms of NEV charging and battery swapping infrastructure, Shenzhen has built a total of 44 super charging stations, with 18 more under construction. It has also built a total of 227,000 charging facilities, with 101,000 built this year.

By 2025, Shenzhen will have built a total of 600,000 charging facilities, 45,000 of which will be fast charging piles.
