Construction accident A TOTAL of seven people were killed after a collapse of scaffolding on a construction site in Anze County, Linfen City of Shanxi Province on Friday night, local authorities confirmed Saturday. The accident occurred at around 10 p.m. Friday during the concreting process for a structure when the scaffolding collapsed suddenly. The collapse led to the fall of six workers and one operator of a concrete pump car to the base of the structure, which measuring around 30 meters in height, and they were buried under the reinforced concrete. Nanotech challenges A CHINESE national research institute, together with the journal Science, on Friday unveiled their list of top 10 challenges remaining in nanoscience and technology. The challenges includes: which characteristics of nanomaterials are relevant with respect to toxicity; how nanotechnology will change the practice of medicine; what scientists will learn about nanomaterials at their surface and interface using new visualization technologies; how nanotechnology will change how we make catalysts and the types of catalysts we can make; and how nanotechnology can transform electronics. New railway A RAILWAY connecting two well-known tourist cities in Yunnan Province opened to traffic yesterday, China Railway said. The fastest travel time between Lijiang and Shangri-La is reduced to one hour and 18 minutes. The railway has a design speed of 140 km per hour and a length of 139 km. |
