SZ mobilizes for quake aid and rescue efforts
    2025-01-09  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A POWERFUL 6.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Dingri County in the southwestern part of the Xizang Autonomous Region at 9:05 a.m. Tuesday, resulting in significant casualties and the destruction of numerous rural dwellings. By midnight on the same day, the confirmed death toll had reached 126, with 188 individuals injured.

In response to the catastrophe, Shenzhen swiftly activated its emergency response mechanisms. The Shenzhen Rescue Volunteers Federation wasted no time and launched a Red Emergency Aid (REA) mission, dispatching a nine-person team to aid the earthquake-stricken area.

This dedicated team, carefully selected from over 90 volunteers, possesses strong high-altitude adaptability and prior experience in similar terrain. Equipped with specialized winter gear and an array of search and rescue equipment, including life detectors and medical supplies, the team is well-prepared to navigate the challenging conditions.

Arriving in Lhasa yesterday morning after departing from Shenzhen, the team will conduct search and rescue operations under the direction of local emergency management authorities.

Numerous organizations are rallying to provide emergency aid for the impacted area.

The Tencent Charity Foundation has pledged an initial donation of 20 million yuan (US$2.73 million) to support relief efforts, including emergency response, transitional resettlement, and post-disaster recovery initiatives. BYD announced a donation of 10 million yuan, and Foxconn Technology Group has donated 20 million yuan.

Meanwhile, the SF Charity Foundation has expedited the procurement of vital disaster relief supplies and is orchestrating their swift delivery to the disaster zone.
