Children's medical insurance expires* when those insured reach 18, but high school students over the age of 18 could renew their insurance with valid* student certificates*, the city's Social Insurance Department said on Sunday.
Students could apply for renewal* at the department with a certificate from their school. The new insurance would expire when students graduate from high school, the department said.
"The renewal procedure is very important because the insurance cannot be used at hospitals once it ends automatically," said Huang Xianfeng, a spokesman for the city's labor and social security bureau.
The city's child medical insurance scheme would soon be expanded to pay for general outpatient* services at Shenzhen hospitals and community medical centers. The timetable for the expansion was not yet known, Huang said.
Children's medical insurance does not currently cover general outpatient services.
The government-run basic medical insurance system includes general health insurance, inpatient* health insurance, children's medical insurance, migrant workers' health insurance and seniors' health insurance. At present around 650,000 children are covered by the medical insurance program, while more than 4 million children and adults have inpatient medical insurance.
