    NCEE high scorers win scholarships

    深圳大学新生奖学金发放

    Wang Yuanyuan

A total of 103 freshmen at Shenzhen University received scholarships of 10,000 yuan each from the university earlier this month for high scores and good performances at the National College Entrance Examinations (NCEE), the university said.

The money was not given to the students in cash but paid directly into their accounts to cover tuition fees, the university students department said.

Apart from the freshman scholarships, there were more than 20 scholarships awarded by social organizations and companies. Shenzhen Hanjiang Cultural Research Association set up a scholarship this year for freshmen from areas such as Shantou, Chaozhou, Jieyang, Shanwei and Fengshun in Guangdong Province who earned high scores at the NCEE. The department said 20 students were now waiting for approval and each would receive a 5,000-yuan scholarship.

For many students, the top honor was the national scholarship given by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance. There were now 55 students waiting for approval from the university who are expecting to receive 8,000 yuan each.

In recent years, many universities started awarding scholarships to freshmen with high NCEE scores to attract top students. Since 2008, the highest award for freshmen at Beijing University was 50,000 yuan and 40,000 yuan at Qinghua University.
