The University of Macao expected to enroll more students from the Chinese mainland in 2012 when construction of a new campus on Hengqin Island, Zhuhai, was finished, the university said.
The number of students enrolled from the Chinese mainland might be doubled or even more after the new campus was built and the university plans to open more majors to mainland students in the future, Mitchell Zhong, official from the university’s admission office, said.
The university enrolled 300 mainland students from 3,000 applicants for bachelor degrees in September. Apart from traditional majors, such as management and economics, the university offered a major called Commercial Gaming Management, a management course for casino and lottery industry*, but only three mainland students from 46 applicants registered for this major, Zhong said.
Other universities, such as the Macao Polytechnic Institute, Macao University of Technology and Science and Macao Institute for Tourism Studies, also planned to increase the number of mainland students. Tuition fee for an undergraduate is between 40,000 and 90,000 yuan a year.
