QINGDAO’S marine science institutes will complete the construction of five high performance supercomputers in the next five years.
Two of the five computers will have a capacity of 10 trillion calculations per second, with the other three being able to do 1 trillion calculations per second.
Boasting a speed of 10 trillion calculations per second, a sub-center of the high performance computing network, affiliated to the China Academy of Sciences, started operation in March.
The sub-center has a storage capacity of 100 terabytes, providing a super-computing platform for research into physical oceanography, biological information and biological energy.
In addition, the construction of a high performance simulating platform is under way. The system which cost 170 million yuan is designed to have a maximum speed of 45 trillion calculations per second.
The State Oceanic Administration’s branch in Beihai will also construct a high performance computing center capable of performing 7 trillion calculations per second.(Li Hao, Zhao Di)
