CHINA’S Liu Xiang lit up the Asian Games in Guangzhou yesterday with his long-awaited debut in the 110m hurdles but it was teammate Lao Yi who stole the show by winning the coveted 100m title.
Lao came from nowhere to win the men’s 100m crown yesterday, making the most of Asian record holder Samuel Francis of Qatar being disqualified from his semifinal.
Lao powered his way past the rest of the pack in the closing stages of the race to clock 10.24 seconds for the gold, followed by Yasir Baalghayth Alnasri from Saudi Arabia (10.26s) and Barakat Al Harthi from Oman (10.28s).
It was China’s first men’s 100m gold medal in Asian Games, after Zheng Chen won the 100m silver at the Beijing Asian Games in 1990. Japan’s Chisato Fukushima clinched the women’s 100m in 11.33 seconds yesterday. (SD-Agencies)
