Dongjiakou to become modern port center
     2010-November-30  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

DONGJIAKOU port area will become a key international shipping center in northeast Asia after its construction, according to the city’s construction committee.

So far, more than 40 billion yuan has been put into projects in the port area, of which one LNG project by Sinopec has already started construction.

Other projects, including an ore port project by Wanbang Group from Singapore, a coal port project by Huaneng Group, an oil port project by Mercuria Group from Switzerland and a coal port project by Datang Group, are now under construction.

Two ports in Qingdao Port will be put into use at the end of this year and the whole port area is expected to open two or three years ahead of schedule.

According to the plan, Dongjiakou port area will cover about 70 square kilometers with 112 berths and annual throughput of 370 million tons. Meanwhile, a port city with a population of 300,000 is also in the planning stage. As an important part of Qingdao Port, Dongjiakou Port has now been officially included into the national port development strategy, marking a historical step in the development of Jiazhou Bay.

The development and construction of the Dongjiakou port area has made Qingdao Port one of the top ports in the world, with a throughput of 40 million containers and 118 million tons of ore.(Wang Yuanyuan, Li Xiaohan)
