A Senior 3 student from Shenzhen Experimental School (SZES) was recommended to Beijing University (BJU) by her principal after winning an oral defense* competition at the school.

The student, Tang Yuxuan, would be interviewed by the university and get an additional 30 points added to her National College Entrance Examinations (NCEE) scores, Principal Cao Xingyan said.

“She is a very outstanding student, good at studying and social activities,” Cao said.

A total of six students entered the final round of selection — oral defense. More than 100 students, parents and reporters attended the competition in which candidates had to answer several questions asked by the judges.

Topics included electric cars, public transportation and environmental protection.

“The oral defense is not just a way to select recommended students. It is also a way to show other students and teachers the sort of model students we need in a modern society,” Cao said.

Meanwhile, seven prestigious universities in China will begin using the same independent exam to test students hoping to gain entrance to them in 2011.

The seven are Beijing University, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing Normal University, Nankai University, Fudan University, Xiamen University and Hong Kong University.

Students who want to gain entrance to any of the seven universities will only have to sit one independent exam, according to a joint announcement made recently.

“This will help lighten the students’ load, otherwise they must take several exams for different universities,” the announcement said.
