Two or three universities are planned in Shenzhen by 2015 to promote the development of higher education, according to a five-year education plan announced by the city's Education Bureau on Thursday.
The number of university students was expected to reach 150,000 by 2015 and 200,000 by 2020, giving more students a chance to pursue a higher education, the plan said.
The new universities could be specialized universities or colleges in areas such as finance, business, energy, Internet and new materials but details were not yet known.
In addition, 23 higher vocational schools were planned by 2015, including a public college for more than 10,000 students. Included in the plan are four vocational schools with more than 5,000 students, a new art school and a vocational school for jewelry-related majors.
Private companies were encouraged to establish schools and the city government would subsidize private schools.
Meanwhile, there are plans to provide 25,000 new seats at city high schools by 2015. International schools would also be encouraged to open branch schools in Shenzhen or classes at local schools. Key city schools could also open branches overseas, the plan said.
