According to the Brooklyn painter, Peter Krashes, his paintings are the product of specific external stimuli which the artist has been compelled to draw into the studio and transform. Seen together, the works are best read as a story, or evolution, and the images often deliberately relate or repeat.
For the past six years, Krashes’ work as an artist has been interwoven with his efforts as a community organizer.
In the studio, 47-year-old Krashes shifts his focus from oil painting to gouaches on paper. Many fall into themes like “Hand Painted Signs Are More Effective,” or “Elected Officials Are Your Surrogates.”
Exhibition curator Chen has some of his prints on show at the exhibition. Based on sketches Chen has compiled a travel journal, the print, “Nomad,” depicts the artist’s feelings as “a member of a people having no permanent abode and who travel from place to place to find fresh pasture for their live stock.”
