Most parents control kids’ computer time
     2010-December-29  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    大多数深圳家长控制孩子用电脑时间

    Wang Yuanyuan

More than 65 percent of parents say they would control their children’s time on a computer to prevent them from being addicted* to the Internet, according to a survey conducted by the student health department from the city’s center for disease control and prevention last week.

The survey of 1,500 parents was conducted in Luohu District. Most thought the disadvantage of spending too much time online would outweigh the advantages of Internet-surfing.

Parents thought a negative influence was mainly from online games and pornography* with more than 44 percent thnking online games were the biggest problem. Other negative influences included Internet love affairs and online chatting.

Most parents said in the survey that they keep an eye on children when they use a computer. “I always have a look at what my son is doing on the computer, so normally he is quite well-behaved. But, if I find him watching some stupid videos for quite a long time, I will remind him to read more news or useful information,” Wang Yali, a mother of a 14-year-old boy, said.

“Parents should guide their children in correctly using a computer and the Internet. For parents of children under 14 years, we strongly suggest parents do not install a computer in their rooms but in the living room where all the family can use the computer together. It will not only improve family relationships but also help children use the Internet correctly,” Zhou Li, director of the center’s student health department, said.
