The Shenzhen campus of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was expected to start enrollments in 2012, aiming to become a first-class research university, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported Thursday.
The Shenzhen campus, which would be in Longgang District, would enroll about 11,000 students and could collaborate with Shenzhen University, Joseph Sung, CUHK president and vice chancellor, told a meeting with Shenzhen Party chief Wang Rong and Mayor Xu Qin.
“The Shenzhen campus will not be a branch of the CUHK but an independent international research university, another ‘Qinghua’ or ‘Beijing’ university in South China. More than one-third of the teachers would be recruited globally,” Sung said.
According to an agreement between the city government and the university last Wednesday, students would be enrolled twice a year.
About 7,000 students were expected to enroll initially with a second round of about 4,000, Sung said.
Majors offered at the university would be mainly in the management and business areas.
Preference could be given to students with Shenzhen hukou, Sung said.
