Charles Dickens is definitely one of my most recommended writers, whose classic novels have impacted and captivated generation after generation and have been seen as a mirror reflecting society.
Today I’d like to recommend a tragic book called “Oliver Twist,” whose tale of misery, hypocrisy, treachery, deception and crime will startle all and rouse great inspiration as well as indignation.
Suffering enormous pain such as child abuse, poverty and mental trauma, the orphan Oliver Twist is the central character.
He originally lived in an orphanage where people were destitute and children in ragged clothes suffered intolerable hunger and thirst. Under these circumstances, I think almost every reader will be astounded by the scene where Oliver asks for more food.
As strange as it seems, Oliver stretched out his hands for more food and not to plead for forgiveness and mercy. This part to a great extent was an indication of his character to fight for the right to survive, to strive for his own values and to struggle with his destiny.
Indifference brought him to the edge of disaster, destitution and even death. With my book and eyes half closed, I forced myself not to think too much.
However, the shadow of a positive Oliver still lingers in my mind, smiling serenely at me.
Compared with Oliver, I realize how lucky I have been in my past and present life. I appreciate this character created by Charles Dickens. Oliver Twist surely acts as a fighter against such injustices as child abuse. In other words, it’s more of a mirror, reminding us of the dark side of the human soul and recalling our lost souls in the howling wind.
