SEVEN new industries, namely advanced manufacturing, information technology, new materials, biology, new energy, energy-saving and new energy automobile manufacturing, made great strides since last year.
Qingdao gathered a number of advanced manufacturers in the city. CSR Qingdao Sifang Co. Ltd. can now produce 200 high-speed trains, 1,000 mass transit vehicles and high-quality coaches a year.
Meanwhile, the city also had several national research centers and industrial organizations in areas such as marine monitoring equipment technology and high-speed train technology.
By 2010, the city had more than 250 home appliances manufacturers, making it the biggest production base for white goods and a plastic processing base for home appliances.
It also has a complete industrial chain in LED technology and optoelectronic information technology. In the area of network hardware, Qingdao had several submarine cables linking the U.S., East Asia and Asia-Pacific areas. The northern data center of Alibaba Inc. was also located in Qingdao. Meanwhile, it is one of the Chinese cities designated to pilot the Internet of Things and RFID technology. There were now about 30 to 40 research organizations and companies working in the field. Companies such as Haier and Hisence also had strong bases in areas such as 3G and new Internet technology.
The new-material industry in Qingdao was mainly in three areas, including new polymer material, non-metallic inorganic material and special metal material. Production volume of the three areas accounted for more than 90 percent of the new-material industry, in which more than 70 percent was from new polymer material.
Qingdao has also gathered many companies and research organizations in new polymer material, new architectural material and new clothing material areas and research on LED technology and chip manufacturing has also made significant achievements over recent years.
The city also has more than 250 biological companies, dozens of which each has sales of more than 100 million yuan a year. Production volume of marine biological medicine accounted for more than 40 percent in the country in 2010.
As a national base for the marine biological industry, Qingdao has distinct advantages in marine biological medicine, marine bio-activators, high technology pharmaceuticals and modernized Chinese traditional medicine. It also has a group of leading agricultural companies strongly competitive in producing biological farm chemicals and biological fertilizer.
Solar-energy products such as solar heaters, solar air-conditioners and solar-lighting made by large home-appliance companies had helped promote the development of the city’s new-energy industry.
Several projects in oceanic energy and geothermal energy had also opened and several districts, such as Jiaozhou, Jiaonan and Laoshan, had already built industrial bases to help promote the area.
Qingdao also has more than 200 companies and government organizations to help promote the development of the energy-saving areas, while a group of car manufacturers was now working on producing high-quality batteries for advanced electric automobiles.
