A Broadway-style musical “Love U, Teresa” will be staged at Shenzhen Poly Theater for three nights later this month to commemorate late Taiwan singer Teresa Teng (1953-1995).
Teng, who died at the age of 42, was a pop superstar of the 70s and early 80s who remains much loved by audiences across Asia. It is often said: “Wherever there are Chinese people, the songs of Teresa Teng can be heard.” Her songs also enjoy huge popularity in Korea, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.
The musical is about Teng in heaven helping young musician Zhou Mengjun to pursue her dream with her music. The musical uses the simple values of love and loyalty celebrated in Teng’s songs.
More than 30 of Teng’s greatest hits will be sung by two actresses who play Teng, including “I Only Care about You,” “The Long Road of Life” and “The Moon Represents My Heart.” The two actresses are Li Shuo, who is called “Little Teresa Teng” and Wang Jing, winner of an international competition for imitating Teng. The musical made its debut in Hong Kong last year and was well-received. Many people said they could not believe the two singers/actresses looked so much like Teng.
A seasoned creative team is responsible for the production. Several musical veterans, including director Joey McKneely (who worked on the revival of “West Side Story” in New York) and Daryl Waters (who won a Tony award for his orchestration of the music for “Memphis,” also on Broadway), have thrown their talent behind Li Dun, the mainland producer who steered “Butterflies,” a hit musical in Beijing last year.
