Taiwan choreographer Lin Hwai-min will bring his classic modern dance “Wandering Siddhartha” to Shenzhen in mid-April.
Adapted from the well-known novel of the same name written by Hermann Hesse, the dance drama was first performed in Taiwan in 1994 and there have been more than 160 performances around the world since then.
Born in 1947, Lin is the creator and founder of the leading Taiwan dance troupe, Cloud Gate Dance Theater. He often draws on traditional Asian culture for inspiration to create works with innovative form and contemporary relevance, which have received rave acclaims around the world. He has won many international honors such as the Joyce Award of Chicago, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the John D. Rockefeller III Award. In 2009, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Movimentos Dance Prize.
According to Time magazine, Lin was young and cocky and wanted to prove that his performers were equal to their Western counterparts. His productions combined Chinese opera and traditional Chinese dances and focused more on spirit, not the form. In Taiwan, audiences often rise and cheer, while in Europe, spectators have been known to become emotional.
