International university to enroll students in 2013
     2011-March-2  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

   国内第一所国际大学落户上海

    Wang Yuanyuan

The Shanghai-New York University will start enrolling students from around the world in 2013, to become China’s first international university.

Established jointly by the East China Normal University and New York University (NYU), the new university will be an independent university sharing education and teaching resources from both the universities, said Yu Lizhong, president of the East China Normal University.

The new university will start enrolling undergraduate students in 2013 and most will be Chinese students. Graduates can earn bachelor’s degree given by the NYU and a diploma given by the Shanghai-New York University.

The key majors will include finance, applied mathematics and economics, which were all strong programs for NYU.

Although the new university aims to become a first-class university, tuition fees will not be much higher than regular universities in China.

“This university is a non-profit educational organization and we also want to give top students from poor families a chance to enter the a world first-class university,” said Yu. The university will offer scholarships of all kinds to help outstanding students.

Each student will have one or two semesters studying abroad.

Established in 1831, NYU is the biggest private university in the United States with 14 departments and a variety of overseas programs in more than 25 countries and regions. It established a Shanghai center at the East China Normal University in 2006. Some undergraduate students at NYU will have a chance to study at the Shanghai center each year and the credits* gained can be transferred to NYU.
