The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUST) began it’s first ever term on Sunday.
The opening ceremony was attended by the school’s first 45 students, who come from all walks of life, and include experts and scholars.
The 45 students were enrolled by the school’s independent registration system instead of the standardized national recruitment method.
The students will be taught by renowned scholars from home and abroad and will receive a diploma from the Ministry of Education upon graduating.
To build the SUST into a high-level university and exert a leading role in the reforms of high-level education, the founding president of the school, Zhu Qingshi, will recruit several distinguished professors from the United States in April.
The school will pay the leading academics 1.15 million yuan (US$174,915) annually.
At present, the faculty are mainly from the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, the China University of Science and Technology, Qinghua University and academics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
