Self-taught Dongguan painter shows his works in SZ
     2011-March-31  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Newman Huo

YE MO, a self-taught painter from Dongguan, is displaying 88 of his landscape and flower paintings at a one-man art exhibition in Guan Shanyue Art Museum until April 10.

Prior to his exhibition in the city, the painter had shown 48 of his landscape paintings at the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts from Dec. 29 through Jan. 6.

The 45 flower paintings have been created by the painter over the past three months. Influenced by works of Chinese master painter Huang Binhong, those flower paintings on silk take on an elegant and natural style.

However, the painter is better known for his bold and strong landscape paintings. As a newly emerging Chinese landscape painter, Ye Mo has given a special title, “Following Conventions But Not Obeying Rules,” to his exhibition.

“In learning Chinese painting, I must first learn the old conventions in order to master traditional techniques and skills, but in creating my works, I must get rid of old rules to establish my own style,” the painter said at the exhibition’s opening ceremony Tuesday.

Born in Dongguan in 1962, Ye began to learn Chinese painting five years ago. He said he enjoyed keeping a low profile while working as a minor official in Dongguan over several years.

The exhibition is organized jointly by the Guancheng Art Museum in Dongguan and Guan Shanyue Art Museum.
