He Xiangning Art Museum will open to the public for free as of today, as the museum celebrates its 14th anniversary.
The museum had remained the only one which charged a 20-yuan admission fee since all major art museums administered by the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Culture, Sports and Tourism started offering free access at the beginning of 2008.
In February this year, the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Finance announced a drive to increase accessibility by eliminating entrance fees for public art museums and libraries at national, provincial and municipal levels by the end of 2011. All public-funded art museums and libraries will be free by the end of 2012.
To compensate for the loss of revenue, the ministries' statement said that all levels of government should increase their expenditure on art galleries and libraries.
Approved by the Central Government, He Xiangning Art Museum was established in the city's Overseas Chinese Town on April 18, 1997.
It is the first national gallery that has been named after an individual as well as the second national modern art museum in addition to the National Art Museum of China in Beijing.
The "1+1: A Cross-Strait-Four-Region Artistic Exchange Project" exhibition, featuring works by 16 artists and designers from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, is being displayed at He Xiangning Art Museum through May 8.
