Reading helps students get to top universities
     2011-April-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    深圳“录取王”谈学英语秘诀

    Wang Yuanyuan

Reading the classics of English literature is a very effective way to improve English, said two Shenzhen students who have each received more than 10 offers from overseas universities.

“Reading English literature and watching English programs can teach you how to use the language properly and improve your listening. The more you read and listen, the better your English will be and soon you will manage how to write and speak like a native,” said Fu Yunfei, a Senior 3 student from Shenzhen Experimental School.

The other student, Zhu Shangran, a Senior 3 student from Shenzhen Middle School, said he started reading English literature years ago. “I’ve enjoyed learning English since I was a child and always like to find some books to practice reading. After years of trying, my English has improved a lot,” said Zhu.

Zhu received offers from 10 overseas universities for his outstanding performance in the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and active participation in social activities. He scored 2,390 points on his SAT, just 10 points off full marks. He has not yet decided which university he will attend.

Fu received offers from 17 universities in the United States including Ivy League schools Princeton, Stanford and Columbia.

She scored 119 points in TOEFL and 2,330 points in her SAT when she was 15. She scored 800 marks in history and 770 in English and American literature in SAT at the age of 16.

The two students also like participating in extra-curricular activities. Zhu was a member of the school’s student union and co-founded a campus magazine, while Fu had been a hostess in school radio and TV programs for years.
