    In high cotton

    走运、富裕

    In high cotton字面解释是“在高棉花中间”。这是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: How was your holiday? Did you go anywhere?

B: Not really. I stayed home watching the tube.

A: Me too. Everything is expensive, gas, restaurants, hotels, entry tickets to parks.

B: Very often, people are first stuck on the road and then driving around trying to find a place to park. It’s much easier to have fun when we were kids.

A: When we were kids, we thought we were in high cotton if we had a dollar.

    B: In high cotton?

A: It means to be “well off,” especially in terms of happiness or wealth.

    B: American slang?

A: Yup. This came from the old south where cotton was one of the few cash crops for the earliest settlers in the United States. High cotton refers to the tallest and healthiest plants, which produced the most cotton. To be “in high cotton” is to have a valuable, bumper crop.

    记住了吗?In high cotton就是走运、富裕。
