A total of 33,166 students applied to sit for this year's National College Entrance Examinations (NCEE), 4,573 more than last year, the city admissions office said last week.

Of these, 30,288 students were from regular high schools, while 2,878 students were from vocational high schools, the office said.

A total of 10,915 students undertook arts courses while 13,939 applied for science courses.

There are 35 examination venues with 1,031 examination rooms across the city, four more than last year. New venues opened at Meilin, Binhe, OCT and Shajing middle schools.

The biggest venue is Pinggang Middle School where 1,550 students are taking the examinations.

More than 650,000 students applied for this year's NCEE in Guangdong Province, 45,000 more than last year, the office said.

Shenzhen police opened hotlines to help examination candidates in emergencies.

They also imposed traffic controls on roads around schools during the examinations and the city environmental protection authority ordered construction sites within 500 meters of the schools to halt work during the NCEE.
