A total of 17 top scorers in this year’s National College Entrance Examinations (NCEE) in different provinces and cities were enrolled by the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Scholarships for these students were as high as HK$480,000.
The students were from mainland provinces and cities including Guangdong, Yunnan, Hunan and Hubei provinces and Beijing and Shanghai. Most of the students were attracted by the fine scholarship, educational resources and opportunities in Hong Kong.
Most of these students will study art subjects such as journalism, management, law and social science, said Donald Ng, a member of staff from the university.
The top scorer for art subjects in Yunnan Province, Liu Yiwen, is one of the winners of the much sought after scholarship.
“I’ve been very interested in Hong Kong universities since Senior 1 and attended the introductory meeting held by HKU in Senior 2. I decided to study international business and global management because I like this subject and Hong Kong is one of the centers of the Asian economy,” Liu said. However, Liu expected he might not be as good as those local students, so he has started practicing his English.
Some other students, such as Lai Qimei from Guangdong, Yin Sizhao, Zhu Zhu and Liang Qian from Beijing, who were all enrolled by Qinghua University in Beijing, changed their mind and chose to study at HKU. “We made the decision not because of the high scholarship, but because of our interests in and hope for Hong Kong and its education resources,” said Liang.
Meanwhile, the number of mainland students applying for Hong Kong universities has increased by 12 percent compared with last year, while this was the first year that the Hong Kong universities started enrolling students in Inner Magnolia, Qinghai, Ningxia, Gansu, Xinjiang and Tibet provinces.
To attract more outstanding mainland students, HKU planed to offer HK$9 million a year in scholarships. If a top mainland NCEE scorer passed the interview held by the university, he/she could receive at least HK$160,000 a year. The tuition fees at the university are about HK$110,000 a year.
The university will also offer scholarships to non-top scorers who also performed well in their studies. The scholarship will be around HK$110,000 to 120,000 yuan a year, the university said.
