An experimental drama by playwright and director Stan Lai and his Performance Workshop Theater will be staged at Poly Theater for three performances July 29-31.
Led by Feng Yigang and Qu Zhongheng, the drama “Crosstalk Travelers” features two experienced travelers telling their own stories.
It is one of Lai’s famous crosstalk series, which started with the groundbreaking “That Evening, We Performed Crosstalk” in 1985.
The debut of the crosstalk series, led by well-known crosstalk artists Li Liqun and Li Guoxiu, helped create the large, popular audience base for Lai’s works and resuscitated the dying traditional performing art of crosstalk.
In the past, Lai added a new drama to the series every four years. The latest however, coproduced with Wang Weizhong, took Lai six years to produce.
The award-winning Lai, known for the drama “Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land,” was described by the BBC as “probably the best Chinese-language playwright and director in the world.” His more than 30 original plays have continually pioneered new ideas in modern Chinese theater.
His crosstalk series also includes the “Look Who’s Crosstalking This Evening” in 1989, “The Complete History of Chinese Thought” in 1997, “Millennium Teahouse” in 2000, and “Total Woman” in 2005.
