High-speed rail

    WORK on the 371-km high speed rail between Shenzhen and Maoming will start in the 12th Five-Year Plan 2011-2016, a Shenzhen government news conference was told Saturday.

    The 45.8-billion-yuan (US$7.3 billion) project will connect with the Shenzhen-Xiamen high-speed railway at Shenzhen North Railway Station and continue westward through Nansha, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Yangjiang before connecting with the Maoming-Zhanjiang railway in the west.

    It was an important part of coastal high-speed rail in Guangdong Province, said Wang Yaming, deputy chief of the Guangdong Development and Reform Commission, who was invited to the conference.

    It will take only two hours from Shenzhen to Maoming, at 250 kilometers per hour.

    Border crossing

    FUTIAN Checkpoint had seen a total of 100,000 travelers cross the border Saturday during to the four-day Universiade holiday.

    Most were Shenzhen residents who went shopping and sightseeing in Hong Kong.

    Phone density

    THE density of phone calls during the peak hours of the opening ceremony of Shenzhen Universiade around the Spring Cocoon was 15.8 times more than the average, China Mobile statistics showed.

    The density was 9384.4 erl per square kilometer, higher than the density during the Asian Games.

    The density of mobile microblog, Fetion, also increased seven fold during the opening ceremony.
