The Lion King 3D
     2011-September-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

狮子王3D

Given that it was made in 1994, an entire generation of kids has now grown up watching "The Lion King" from the couch. Everyone, young and old, will find something to appreciate in this Shakespearean tale of a young lion discovering his rightful* place in the world.

The birth of baby Simba (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) is a celebrated* event in the African savannah, which welcomes him as the heir* to his stern* but beloved father, King Mufasa (James Earl Jones).

The only animal who doesn't cheer Simba's arrival is his uncle, Scar (Jeremy Irons). Angried at having to step aside, Scar arranges for Mufasa's death and Simba's banishment*.

The young Simba (Matthew Broderick) finds a new home with meerkat* Timon (Nathan Lane) and warthog* Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella). But when his first love, Nala (Moira Kelly) tracks him down, he realizes he has a legacy* to fulfill.

The movie itself is grand and intimate*, serious and silly, heartbreaking and heartwarming--all of which have made it a classic in the Disney movies. The Elton John/Tim Rice songs are well-chosen and emotionally appropriate*, and it's likely children will be singing "Hakunah Matata" for days after hearing them.

As for the 3D effects, they're lovely, suited* perfectly--if somewhat unexpectedly to the hand-drawn animation* of the original film. It feels as if we could reach out and touch the birds flying across the screen, the gazelles* galloping* through the savannah, raindrops falling from the sky. The visuals pack an emotional heft*, too, as when Simba and Scar battle for supremacy* in a fight that now fills the screen with ferocity*.
