8,000 students enrolled by SZ Polytechnic
     2011-September-21  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

八千余名新生就读深职院

Wang Yuanyuan

A total of 8,329 students were enrolled by Shenzhen Polytechnic this year and started their college life on Friday.

The students come from 18 provinces and cities, and half have not yet chosen a major, the college said.

These students will choose their majors after one or two semesters according to their interests, specialties, career prospects and performances.

For example, students studying at the automobile and transportation department would choose from one of the five majors that the department offers -- automobile application and technology, automobile technical services and marketing, automobile electronic technology, transportation safety and intellectual control, and urban rail transportation control next year.

"It is a new policy at the college. We hope students can take time to learn about the majors and what career choices they would be left with," said Liu Hong, president of the college.

Meanwhile, the college plans to introduce more work placements and modernize teaching methods.

"The new system can allow some students to start working while studying. It will help students learn about the industries they will end up working in and enable them to focus their studies towards that," said Liu.

A business incubator department will start operation this semester, providing platform for students who want to start their own businesses. All the students can participate in the program and the most promising businesses have a chance of receiving financial support from the college, Liu said.
