Dao Lang goes from rags to riches
     2011-October-20  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Former nightclub singer Dao Lang will give a concert at Shenzhen Stadium on Oct. 21.

Dao Lang is the pseudonym of Luo Lin, who is from Sichuan Province. He did not rise to fame the conventional way. After Dao Lang released his album “The First Snows of 2002” in 2004, without any marketing campaign, songs such as the title track, “Gentleness in Hand,” “Sweetheart,” “Seeds Under the Petals” and “Punishment for Impulsion” became instant hits through word of mouth. It is thought that 2.7 million copies of the album have been sold.

A high school dropout, Dao Lang began playing keyboard at a bar in Neijiang City, Sichuan Province, at the age of 17. For four years, he performed in bars in Chengdu, Chongqing, Tibet and Xi’an. From 1991 to 1995, he played in a band while performing crowd-pleasing music at bars in Hainan. The band could not make money from music so it was forced to break up. In 1995, his fortunes changed when he went to Xinjiang with his wife and set up his own studio -- Northwest Music Workshop.

To learn more about music, Dao Lang would read about it in the library every day, visit the Gobi desert, and learn Uygur folk songs from local families. He insisted on writing three to four songs every day and has finished over 3,000 songs.

Since his breakthrough in 2004, Dao Lang has traveled a broad road. He held his first concert in Urumqi in 2007. In the following year, he made extensive tours of the United States, Canada and Malaysia.
