Lao Lang brings audiences back to college days
     2011-December-6  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Pop singer Lao Lang will give a concert of nostalgic songs at Shenzhen Concert Hall on Jan. 15.

In 1995, a song named “My Deskmate” swept the country and made Lao Lang an overnight star.

The college campus songs from Taiwan in the 1980s once brought joy to young mainlanders, and dominated the pop music scene. It wasn’t until 1995 when domestic campus songs began to emerge, with Lao Lang’s works as the highlights. They include “My Deskmate,” “Dust in the Wind,” “The Brother Sleeps on the Upper Deck,” “Youth Without Any Regrets” and “Street Singer’s Lover.”

Lao Lang, whose autonym is Wang Yang, means “old wolf” in Chinese. Though born into a musical family in 1968, he chose wireless communications as his major in college and became a computer engineer after graduation.

His destiny changed when he and Gao Xiaosong, now a well-known composer, collaborated to produce the above-mentioned songs. Since then, he has devoted himself entirely to a career in pop music.

Lao Lang is far from prolific. He has released only four albums — “Youth Without Any Regrets,” “Dust in the Wind,” “Clear” and “The Winter of Beijing.” However, each of them has been hugely successful. For example, the album “Dust in the Wind” has sold 400,000 copies within a year. In December 2002, Lao Lang held a launch party for the album “Clear” and sold it on Amazon.cn. It registered a sales volume of over 30,000 discs by the end of the year.

Lao Lang has held concerts and participated in festivals around the world, including the Shanghai Jazz Music Festival and Lijiang Jokul Music Festival in 2007, and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival in 2008.
