SZ eyes overseas innovative teams
     2012-January-13  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Li Hao

SHENZHEN will introduce at least 10 outstanding overseas innovative teams this year, said Mayor Xu Qin at a press conference following the conclusion of the annual meeting of the city’s legislature Thursday.

“The city will step up its efforts to introduce innovative professionals and scientific achievements needed for the city’s economic and industrial development,” said Xu.

In addition, Shenzhen will strengthen its cooperation with leading research institutions such as Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and strive to have more multinational companies establish their research and development institutions in the city, according to Xu.

The main telecommunication company in France, France Telecom, established a research institute in Shenzhen on Wednesday, the company’s first branch in China.

“The city will push ahead international cooperation to improve its innovative ability and the government’s financial support to innovation is to be increased. At least 50 key technological breakthroughs must be achieved this year,” said Xu.

Last year saw the establishment of 134 national and provincial key laboratories in Shenzhen. Meanwhile, the city’s efforts on industrial upgrading also gained momentum, according to Xu.

The city ranked first among the 10 most innovative cities in the country last year, according to a national ranking.

Residents’ well-being topped the agenda of this year’s legislative session, during which legislators reviewed the government’s work report and gave proposals on hot issues including food safety, environmental protection, transport and housing.
