200 flights delayed by heavy fog
     2012-January-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Li Hao

ALMOST 200 flights were delayed and 37 were canceled yesterday at Shenzhen International Airport due to heavy fog. Most of the delays were between one and two hours.

The heavy fog even forced 21 flights bound for Shenzhen to land in other cities including Guangzhou, Changsha, Xiamen and Sanya, said the airport.

Three flights leaving the city had to return shortly after takeoff. The airport added almost 80 flights to transport the delayed passengers. The schedule returned normal at around 3 p.m.

The city’s meteorological observatory has issued an orange fog warning signal for the coming days. The orange warning signal stands for the foggy weather under which visibility may be less than 200 meters.

Due to the continuing rainfall in South China, the flights in and out of the airports in Shenzhen, Haikou and Zhanjiang would probably be delayed today, according to Shenzhen Airlines.

According to the city’s observatory, rainy and cloudy weather will dominate this week. The rainfall is expected to weaken starting tomorrow.

Affected by a strong cold front, the temperature is expected to decrease further next Monday, with the lowest temperature forecast at 9 degrees Celsius.
