ACTING Guangdong Governor Zhu Xiaodan was elected by the provincial legislative body to be governor of the province yesterday.

    Zhu said he faces great challenges in steering Guangdong, the richest province in China, as the world economy endures a downturn.

    He expects Guangdong to achieve GDP growth of 8.5 percent this year.

    Zhu, born in 1953 and a native of Wenzhou City in Zhejiang Province, was named acting governor after former Governor Huang Huahua resigned in November last year.

    Huang, 65, had been governor of Guangdong since 2003.

    Zhu started to work in 1971 and joined the CPC in 1975. He attended the graduate school of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee. He is an alternate member of the 17th CPC Central Committee and vice Party chief of Guangdong.

    He became director of Standing Committee of the Guangzhou Municipal People’s Congress in 2007.
