College students to serve at U Station during holiday
     2012-January-18  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Wang Yuanyuan

The city’s U station will stay open during the Spring Festival and university students will offer services to residents and visitors, according to the city’s Communist Youth League last week.

There are 1,931 students from Shenzhen University, Shenzhen Polytechnics and Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology who are not from the city but will stay here during the holiday and many of them will volunteer in places such as rail stations, long-distance coach stations and U stations.

There are nearly 100 students from Shenzhen University’s Volunteer Association serving at Shenzhen West Station, while the number of student volunteers at Shenzhen Rail Station in Luohu District has almost reached 1,000.

“They mainly help provide transportation information, carry luggage and assist traffic,” said Zhang Zhihua, head of the league.

“Shenzhen is a young city with lots of migrants. There were a lot of volunteers at the weekend, but the number tends to drop sharply over holidays as many of them go home for the festival. It is great that these students can offer their services and have a meaningful Spring Festival in Shenzhen,” said Zhang.

“I hope to find some part-time jobs and gain more social experience in Shenzhen during the holiday. Spending a traditional festival away from one’s family can be hard, so I decided to become a volunteer, which would be the best way to be around people. I applied to be a volunteer at the U station, so that I can not only help the others but also have a nice and meaningful holiday,” said Wu Xiangxiang, a postgraduate student from Shenzhen University.

According to the league, there will also be festival celebration parties and free movies offered to students who spend their Spring Festival at the universities.
