Campus magazine to express students’ thoughts
     2012-March-28  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Wang Yuanyuan

It’s not easy to run a magazine, but six high school students from Bao’an Middle School in Bao’an District are making those dreams come true.

After working hard for about three months, they’ve launched their first magazine at the school. The magazine’s name translates to English as, roughly, Survive, Live.

“We just hope to provide a platform for students to express their thoughts and ideas. The main content of the magazine is what we are thinking about in our daily lives. We hope the magazine can be popular at the school and in the city,” said Yue Hongdou, chief editor and a Senior 2 student.

The students were responsible for every part of the magazine’s creation, from writing, editing and designing to printing and publishing.

“We even raised the funds ourselves,” Yue said.

The magazine’s name has a multi-layered meaning, Yue said.

“Everybody has to fight for survival in society and many people have too little time to think about life and meaning,” Yue said. “We hope the name can inspire them to think more about life because life is not just about surviving.”

The students, all with outstanding grades in key classes, are all members of an administrative body that oversees school clubs and activities, giving them plenty of things to talk about together — and thus, a magazine was born.

“We talk all the time and found that every one of us had a lot of thoughts about life and wanted to make a magazine, so we thought, ‘Why not make one ourselves?’” Yue said.

However, that was no easy task — the students knew nothing about creating a magazine or editing.

“Each of us is in charge of one aspect, such as editing, designing, printing and publishing. It costs 3,000 yuan for printing, so one person chipped in 500 yuan. Some articles were written by ourselves and some were provided by students voluntarily,” she said.

The first magazine was very well received.

“Senior One students liked it the most and many of them gave us advice. As a student magazine, we really appreciate suggestions from students,” she said.

According to the plan, there will be one magazine every month and more volunteer students will be recruited.

“We hope it can become a platform for all Shenzhen students in the future,” she said.
