"Out of My Mind," by Sharon M. Draper, is about a fifth grader named Melody who has cerebral palsy* but has a photographic* memory and is very intelligent. However, she cannot talk or write and her only source of communication is through a communication board with words and pictures.
Doctors and some teachers believe that Melody is incapable of learning. Therefore she is placed in a special education class with students being "babysat" instead of being "taught."
One day, Melody becomes frustrated* in class and it is realized that she needs more than just alphabet lessons. Melody is given the opportunity to attend classes with other 5th graders with the aid of a student teacher.
She makes a new friend named Rose. Now she faces new challenges such as preconceived* assumptions and bullies*. With the support of her aide, family and her neighbor Mrs. V, Melody is finally given a "voice" when she uses a special computer, which allows her type in what she wants to say.
Melody is given the opportunity to prove her intelligence when the class enters a competition.
Draper carefully created Melody as a real character and person, not just someone with a physical challenge. The book is a tribute* to other children who have various physical challenges, and also honors the families who take care of those with disabilities. (SD-Agencies)
