Tribute paid to Deep Purple rocker Lord
A host of stars paid tribute* on July 17 to musician Jon Lord, the co-founder of legendary rock band Deep Purple who has died aged 71.
The former keyboardist and co-author of the band’s most famous hit, “Smoke on the Water,” was surrounded by family when he passed away at a London clinic on July 16, after battling with pancreatic* cancer since last August.
Lohan takes new role
Amid ongoing legal issues, a recent car crash and a run-in with paramedics*, Lindsay Lohan has secured a new movie role.
Producer Braxton Pope says Lohan will star in “The Canyons,” a film by “Less Than Zero” author Bret Easton Ellis about sex and ambition among 20-somethings in Los Angeles. Paul Schrader, who wrote “Taxi Driver” and directed “American Gigolo,” is set to direct the film.
Halle Berry taken to hospital after film accident
U.S. actress Halle Berry suffered a minor head injury during a movie-shoot fight sequence and was treated at a Los Angeles hospital and released.
Berry’s Los Angeles publicist Meredith O’Sullivan said the 45-year-old actress suffered the injury on the night of July 17 on the set of her upcoming movie “The Hive.” Berry was taken to a hospital as a precaution and released a short time later.
‘Twilight’saga’s Teen Choice wins total 41
It was announced at July 22’s Teen Choice Awards in the United States that the fantasy film series has won 41 surfboard-shaped trophies since it launched in 2008, including awards earned this year for the penultimate* installment, “Breaking Dawn — Part 1.”
“Twilight” stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner were on hand to pick up this year’s batch of boards, as well as the ultimate choice award, the teen-fueled show’s version of a lifetime achievement award.
