OCT Contemporary Art Terminal (OCAT) in Nanshan District is a key center for contemporary artists. This summer, four artists have been invited to attend the seventh OCAT International Art Residency project.

They are Marko Daniel, a curator of Tate Modern, Professor Janwillem Schrofer, former president of the Royal Academy of Visual Arts, Chinese artist Liu Shiyuan and Dutch artist Constant Dullaart.

A series of seminars, workshops and lectures will be open to the public in OCT-LOFT and He Xiangning Art Museum.

Schrofer will give two lectures Aug. 28-29 in OCT-LOFT’s North Zone. The first lecture by the artist in residence will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 28. The other lecture’s topics will be the Royal Academy of Visual Arts and how to find promising artists at 9 a.m. Aug. 29. Former OCAT’s artists in residence and local artists will be invited for discussion.

Born in Amsterdam in 1945, Schrofer served as president of the Royal Academy of Visual Arts from 1982 to 2010. Before that he had been involved in a range of welfare and cultural fields as a policy and organizational consultant and project developer responsible for planning the building of new facilities and organizations. During his stay in the academy, he fostered a global network of artists and the academy evolved into an internationally renowned research residency. Today he is active as a consultant and advisor to the Netherlands’ Ministry of Culture and as a board member or chairman of several cultural organizations.

On the afternoon of Sept. 15, Daniel will give a lecture on Tate Modern’s The Tanks project at He Xiangning Art Museum. The Tanks is a 15-week festival from July 18 to Oct. 28 featuring performance and installation art and exhibitions of historical works.

The festival takes place at the raw and industrial oil tanks in the former power station on the banks of the river Thames in London. The project provides an anchor and home for the live art and film programs which have been presented in diverse spaces around Tate Modern.

Over 40 established and emerging artists from across the world will be taking part, including Chinese artist Liu Ding.

Apart from academic lectures, OCAT will also hold open days for artists Liu Shiyuan and Dullaart. The dates have not been set yet.

Liu, 27, was born in Beijing and lives in New York City. She obtained her master’s degree in fine arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York City this year and her bachelor’s degree in fine arts in 2009 at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.

She has had various exhibitions in Italy, Britain, Germany and other countries. Her latest work, “Too Many Words,” is being exhibited at the seventh Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale in OCAT until Aug. 31. Liu uses photography to extract bodies and portraits from theatrical plots to create a fragmented stage.

Dullaart, 33, lives and works in Berlin. He is a former resident artist of the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam.

OCAT’s International Art Residency has been held for six years, attracting 27 curators and artists from 15 countries and regions, providing a communication platform for local and foreign artists.
