毁三观 huǐ sānguān

Meaning:

“三” means “three,” and “观” means “point of view.” Chinese netizens use “三观” to refer to “价值观” (values), “人生观” (life philosophy) and “世界观” (world view), which are more or less the same thing. “毁” means “to destroy.” The phrase is used when netizens want to complain about something very disappointing that has left them disillusioned.

Example:

A: 前天我在淘宝上看到一家蛋糕店，贴出来的图片太漂亮了。

Qiántiān wǒ zài táobǎo shàng kàndào yījiā dàngāo diàn, tiē chūlái de túpiàn tài piàoliang le。

I came upon a cake shop on taobao.com the day before yesterday. The pictures they posted were fabulous.

B: 然后你就买了他们家的蛋糕？

Ránhòu nǐ jìu mǎi le tāmen jiā de dàngāo?

So you bought their cake?

A: 对呀。我买了一只带有小熊图案的蛋糕。

Duì ya。Wǒ mǎi le yīzhī dàiyǒu xiǎoxíong tú’àn de dàngāo。

Yeah. I bought a cake with a bear-pattern topping.

B: 结果怎么样？

Jiéguǒ zěnme yàng?

How was it?

A: 蛋糕送到以后，我打开盖一看，差点气哭了。瞧，这是照片。

Dàngāo sòngdào yǐhòu, wǒ dǎkāi gài yíkàn, chàdiǎn qì kū le。Qiáo, zhèshì zhàopiān。

B: 这么难看的蛋糕，毁三观啊。

Zhème nánkàn de dàngāo, huǐ sānguān a。

How terrible it looks! That’s totally disappointing.
