极品

jípǐn

Meaning:

“极” means “extreme,” and “品” means “quality.” Traditionally “极品” means “of the best quality,” as when people say “极品咖啡” (best-quality coffee). However, Chinese netizens now often use the phrase sarcastically to refer to people that are weird, mean or ugly.

Example:

A: 大学生活怎么样？

Dàxué shēnghuó zěnmeyàng?

How is your college life?

B: 别的都好，就是遇到一个极品室友，极品到我不知道该怎么吐槽。

Biéde dōu hǎo, jìushì yùdao yīgè jípǐn shìyǒu, jípǐn dào wǒ bù zhīdào zěnme tǔcáo。

All is fine except I have a roomate, who is such a nuisance that I don’t know how to describe her.

A: 说来听听。

Shuōlái tīngting。

Shoot.

B: 她是福建人，每晚用我听不懂的家乡话大声打电话，至少半小时。

Tā shì fújiàn rén, měiwǎn yòng wǒ tīng budǒng de jiāxiānghuà dàshēng dǎ diànhuà, zhìshǎo bàn xiǎoshí。

She is from Fujian Province. For at least half an hour every night she talks loudly on the phone in her hometown dialect.

A: 你建议她去阳台或者洗手间打呗。

Nǐ jiànyì tā qù yángtài huòzhě xǐshǒujiān dǎ bei。

You can ask her to talk on the balcony or in the toilet.

B: 没用，她声音很大，估计隔壁宿舍的都能听见。

Méiyòng, tā shēngyīn hěn dà, gūjì gébì sùshè de dōu néng tīngjiàn。

No use. Her voice is so loud that people can hear her in the next room.
