Shenzhen residents will have the chance to enjoy ballet “Swan Lake” at Shenzhen Poly Theater on Dec. 4 and 5.
One of the most famous ballets of all, “Swan Lake” was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky between 1875 and 1876. It contains four acts and adopts characters and scenes from Russian folk tales.
The ballet tells the story of Odette, a princess who is turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer’s curse. In the end, love triumphs over evil when the princess is saved by a prince.
When the ballet was premeired at the Bolshoi Teater of Russia in Moscow on Feb. 21, 1877, critics attacked Tchaikovsky’s use of waltz, which was considered unsuited to ballet at the time. But after being performed in the Mariinsky Theater for six consecutive days after the premeire, “Swan Lake” was recognized as a masterpiece. The ballet has been on the repertory at the Bolshoi Teater since 1901.
Russian music director Valery Platonov, choreographer Yury Grigorovich, stage designer Simon Virsaladze, and art director Shamil Teregulov will be responsible for the performance in Shenzhen.
