CHINESE composer and conductor Tan Dun received in Moscow on Saturday the prestigious musical award named after Russian musician Dmitri Shostakovich.
Tan, as one of the most iconic contemporary Chinese musicians, said he was “honored and so touched” to receive the Shostakovich Award in Russia.
During the press conference before the award ceremony, Tan said music acts like a bridge that connects Chinese and Russian people together.
Recalling his early training in music, Tan said he became familiar with the works of Shostakovich at a young age and held the Russian musician in high regard. “There are no boundaries in the world of music. On this common platform, we are able to connect past with future, share ideas and thoughts, dig into the inner self and pursue our dreams,” Tan said.
The laureate then performed for the Russian audience in collaboration with the Symphony Orchestra of New Russia, during which Russian musicians used their orchestral instruments to simulate Chinese folkloric instruments and natural sounds under Tan’s dramatic conducting.
Tan is widely known for his scores for movies “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” and “Hero,” as well as operas “Marco Polo” and “The First Emperor.” Other awards won by Tan Dun include a Grammy, an Oscar, the Grawemeyer Award for Classical Composition and Musical America’s Composer of the Year.
