怪咖
     2012-November-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

怪咖  guàikā

Meaning:

“怪” is “weird,” “咖” is from Fujian dialect meaning “role.” “怪咖” is a popular phrase in Taiwan referring to weird people. Because Taiwanese songs and TV shows are popular on the mainland, this phrase has been accepted by young people here too.

Example:

A: 小明收留了一只流浪猫,样子很萌。

Xiǎomíng shōulíu le yīzhī líulàng māo, yàngzi hén méng。

Xiaoming took in a stray cat. It’s very cute.

B: 不止是萌,我听说这只猫还相当怪咖。

Bùzhǐ shì méng, wǒ tīngshuō zhèzhī māo hái xiāngdāng guàikā。

Not just cute, the cat is a weirdo I’ve heard.

A: 是吗?这猫咪有什么怪癖?

Shìma? Zhè māomī yǒu shénme guàipǐ?

Really? What makes it strange?

B: 喜欢看古装连续剧,还爱戴墨镜。

Xǐhuan kàn gǔzhuāng liánxùjù, hái ài dài mòjìng。

It loves ancient-costume TV plays and sunglasses.

A: 你说的是一只猫吗?

Nǐ shuō de shì yīzhī māo ma?

Are you talking about a cat?

B: 不信你去问小明。这只猫每天陪她看两小时的电视剧,而且只要戴上墨镜就很乖。

Búxìn nǐ qù wèn xiǎomíng。Zhè zhī māo měitiān péi tā kàn liǎngxiǎoshí de diànshìjù, érqiě zhǐyào dàishang mòjìng jìu hěn guāi。

Ask Xiaoming herself. The cat sits for two hours every day watching TV plays with her, and it purrs when you put sunglasses on its face.
