Rain to be punished
The South Korean military will punish pop star Rain for meeting with a top actress while on duty during his mandatory* military service, the Defense Ministry said on January 3.
The released photos showing Rain meeting with Kim Tae-hee raised questions that popular entertainers may receive special favors during their military service. But the ministry denies Rain has received special treatment.
Rain met with Kim at least three times late last year, ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said in a briefing.
‘Doctor Who’ stamps to be issued
The many characters in the science-fiction show “Doctor Who” will be seen on the edge of letters in 2013.
Britain’s Royal Mail is marking the 50th anniversary of the popular show with a series of stamps featuring each of the 11 actors who have played the title role, known as the Doctor.
Bardot threatens to ‘flee’ France
After the Oscar-nominated French actor Gerard Depardieu was granted citizenship by Russian President Vladimir Putin on January 3, French actress Brigitte Bardot announced that she will seek residency in Russia.
Bardot, an ardent* animal rights activist, is upset with the decision of a French court to euthanize* two ill elephants and issued a statement on her website late Friday announcing her intention.
“If those in power have the impudence* and cowardice and kill the two elephants ... I have decided to ask for Russian citizenship to flee the country, which has become nothing more than an animal cemetery*,” she said.
Wong returns with new film
Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai’s long-awaited martial arts film “The Grandmaster” was shown in public for the first time in Beijing on January 6, after more than six years in production.
The film spans several decades of Chinese history to tell the story of legendary martial artist Yip Man, who went on to train Bruce Lee, and features lengthy battles between rival kung-fu masters.
Wong, 54, is best known for his slow-burn drama in 2000, “In the Mood for Love.”(SD-Agencies)
