Drunken Porsche SUV driver rear-ends taxi, beats cabbie
     2013-May-10  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A DRUNKEN Porsche driver rear-ended an electric cab after running a red light and assaulted the cab’s driver early Wednesday morning, police said.

The incident infuriated nearby cab drivers, who called together more than 100 fellow cabbies to besiege the Porsche driver.

The accident happened at the intersection of Shennan Boulevard and Hongling Road near the border between Futian and Luohu districts at about 2:40 a.m. Wednesday. Police said the Porsche Cayenne SUV ran a red light while traveling north to south on Hongling Road and crashed into the rear end of the e-cab, which was going through the crossing east to west on Shennan Boulevard.

The Porsche’s front end was destroyed in the collision. The cab spun out of control and crashed into a roadside barrier.

The cab driver, Li Jinfeng, got out of the car and took out his mobile phone to call police. The Porsche driver approached Li, knocked him down and kicked him for more than 30 seconds, according to a witness surnamed Pan.

Cab drivers passing by the scene were enraged by the Porsche driver’s unruly behavior and called more than 100 fellow drivers to the scene. A group of the drivers encircled the Porsche SUV, hitting it and trying to flip it over. Another group besieged the police car in which the Porsche driver was seated.

A special police force was then sent to keep order at the scene. Cab drivers didn’t leave the scene until about 4:30 a.m., after the Porsche SUV was towed away.

Li has been hospitalized at Shenzhen People’s Hospital. Doctors said Li has brain trauma and has lost some hearing in his left ear.

Li, 36, said he was taken to the hospital after the accident and didn’t know about cab drivers’ response. Li said he didn’t know the cab drivers who went to the scene, but said Shenzhen cab drivers are closely united and often help each other when one of them gets in trouble.

Tests showed that the blood-alcohol level of the Porsche driver, surnamed Chen, was 124.41 milligrams per 100 milliliters, meaning Chen was driving while intoxicated. Chen also is suspected of running the red light and assaulting the driver and will be investigated.

Police said they hope cab drivers who damaged property would turn themselves in to police. (Zhang Yang)
