Pianist Joel Fan to give free concert Sunday
     2013-July-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

Chinese-American pianist Joel Fan will give a free concert Sunday afternoon at Shenzhen Concert Hall in Futian District.

Free tickets will be given to people who register on the concert hall’s website, www.szyyt.com, which has English- and Chinese-language versions.

Fan will play Chopin’s “Prelude in G Minor, Op. 28,” “Prelude in C Minor, Op. 28,” “Prelude in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 45” and “Nocturne in A Flat Major, Op. 61,” Liszt’s “Mephisto Waltzes” and Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.”

Fan is a New York City-based pianist noted for his work with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Project, as well as his solo virtuosity and eclectic repertoire.

He was born in the United States to parents from Taiwan. He began studying piano at The Juilliard School and has received a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and a master’s degree in piano performance from the Peabody Institute.

He has appeared internationally in recital and with orchestras such as the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, New Symphony Orchestra of Bulgaria, Santa Fe Pro Musica and Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

Fan has been awarded by several international competitions, notably the D’Anglo Young Artists International Competition and Busoni International Piano Competition. He has also been named a Presidential Scholar by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has described him as “a superb musician, able to cross one style into another without any diminution in musical sophistication.” The Los Angeles Times says he is a “soaring talent — Fan’s facility makes his playing a technical wonder.” The Washington Post noted him as “a versatile and sensitive pianist — an impressive talent.”
