The House on Mango Street
     2013-September-11  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    《芒果街上的小屋》

Instead of having chapters of episodes, the book contains “vignettes,” which the dictionary defines as “a short descriptive literary sketch.” Each vignette contains an important part of the story.

The whole story describes the thoughts, feelings, and meories of Esperanza, a Hispanic* girl living in the poorer corner of the city, with dreams to escape* her world. At the same time, she grows up and leaves her childhood, learning about the fears and dangers of the world she never knew of before. Growing up turns out to be a big challenge.

The first vignette is meant to describe the setting. The second, “Hairs,” describes the looks and characteristics of the characters. The third, called “Boys and Girls,” tells the difference between genders*. The following vignette, called “My Name,” paints the image of self and the feelings of hope for the future.

These vignettes are not just collections of random thoughts, but a poetic story with a well-drawn setting, characterization, and gripping* tone.

Even though the story is about Hispanics, this is a book for all races. The poverty and dreams of having one’s home will touch everyone. The voice of the author is not too fancy, but vivid from everyday life. If you want to read a beautiful story about growing up, this is the book for you.

The Chinese version is available on dangdang.com.
