     2013-September-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Meaning:

“杀马特” is the transliteration of the English word “smart.” However, Chinese netizens use the term sarcastically to refer to those young people who dress themselves up like idiots. These people dye their hair into weird colors like blue, green or orange, put on heavy makeup, have body piercings and rings attached, and wear knockoff luxury clothes. Often working in hair salons, restaurants and factories, these people were born after the 1990s in rural areas but have come to live in cities. The stereotyped “杀马特” like catchy online songs and play computer games.

    Example:

    Zuótiān wǒ jiàndào xiǎoqiáng le。

    I saw Xiaoqiang yesterday.

Jìushì nǐ nàge pǔshí de shāncūn biǎodì?

You mean your down-to-earth cousin from a rural village?

He is no longer the down-to-earth country boy you remembered from half a year ago. He dyes his hair red and puts on makeup. He looks no different from a redneck punk.
